Regular nail trimming is an essential part of your pet’s grooming and overall health care routine. It involves carefully clipping the tips of the nails to a safe length to prevent overgrowth, splitting, or discomfort. Overgrown nails can curl into the paw pads, cause pain when walking, or even lead to infections and posture issues.
During a professional nail trim, a veterinarian or trained technician uses specialized pet nail clippers or a grinder to shorten each nail while avoiding the sensitive quick (the inner blood vessel). The feet and paw pads are also examined for signs of injury, infection, or abnormalities. For pets who are anxious or have black nails, trimming may be done gradually or with mild restraint for safety and comfort.
The frequency of trimming depends on the pet’s lifestyle, breed, and activity level—typically every 3–6 weeks for dogs and every 4–8 weeks for cats. Pets that spend most of their time indoors or on soft surfaces tend to need more frequent trims because their nails do not wear down naturally.
