Pet Ear Infections (Otitis) – Description and Care

Ear infections, also known as otitis externa, are one of the most common health problems seen in dogs and cats. They occur when the ear canal becomes inflamed or infected due to bacteria, yeast, parasites (like ear mites), allergies, moisture, or foreign materials such as grass seeds.
Certain breeds with floppy ears, excessive hair in the ear canal, or frequent swimming habits are at higher risk because moisture and limited airflow can promote infection.

Ear infections can range from mild irritation to severe, painful inflammation that affects hearing and balance. Chronic or untreated cases may extend into the middle or inner ear (otitis media/interna), leading to more serious complications.

Common Causes:

  • Allergies: Food or environmental allergens (pollen, dust, mold) leading to chronic inflammation.
  • Moisture: “Swimmer’s ear” effect when ears stay damp, promoting yeast or bacterial growth.
  • Parasites: Ear mites, especially in kittens and outdoor pets.
  • Foreign bodies: Grass awns or debris lodged in the ear canal.
  • Hormonal or skin disorders: Such as hypothyroidism or seborrhea.
  • Excessive ear cleaning or trauma: Can irritate the canal and cause inflammation.

Signs of an Ear Infection:

  • Head shaking or scratching at the ears
  • Redness or swelling inside the ear
  • Discharge that may be brown, yellow, or bloody
  • Foul odor from the ear
  • Pain or sensitivity when the ear is touched
  • Tilting of the head or balance problems
  • Hearing loss (in more severe cases)

Diagnosis:

A veterinarian will perform a thorough ear examination using an otoscope to view the ear canal and eardrum. A cytology test (ear swab examined under a microscope) is often done to identify whether bacteria, yeast, or mites are present. In recurrent or severe cases, culture and sensitivity testing or imaging may be recommended to guide targeted treatment.

Treatment and Care:

Treatment depends on the underlying cause and severity:

  • Ear Cleaning: The veterinarian gently cleans the ear canal to remove wax, discharge, and debris.
  • Topical Medications: Prescription ear drops containing antibiotics, antifungals, or anti-inflammatory agents are commonly used.
  • Systemic Medications: Oral antibiotics, antifungals, or corticosteroids may be prescribed for deeper or more severe infections.
  • Allergy Management: If allergies are the root cause, long-term control through diet changes, allergy medication, or immunotherapy may be necessary.
  • Follow-Up Care: Recheck exams ensure the infection has fully cleared and help prevent recurrence.

At-home care includes administering prescribed medication as directed, cleaning the ears only with veterinarian-approved solutions, and monitoring for signs of recurrence.

Importance of Prompt Care:

  • Prevents Chronic Damage: Untreated infections can lead to thickened ear canals, hearing loss, or permanent scarring.
  • Relieves Pain and Discomfort: Early treatment quickly eases itching, pain, and odor.
  • Prevents Recurrence: Addressing the underlying cause (like allergies or moisture) helps stop repeated infections.
  • Supports Long-Term Health: Healthy ears improve your pet’s comfort, balance, and overall quality of life.
